While the allies fought the Germans across Europe, Churchill also waged another deadly secret war. It involved countless acts of courage, ruthlessness, double dealing and betrayal. No agent anywhere on the continent ever knew who they could trust. Some people became double agents as they believed it the best strategy for staying alive. Some played both sides for the thrill of the danger. The legendary British Agent ‘Tricycle’ combined this with a voracious sexual appetite – his code name referred to his penchant for three in a bed escapades.
Churchill set up the Special Operations Executive to ‘set Europe Ablaze’. Ironically one of its deadliest enemies, from the start, was its rival service Mi6, which betrayed SOE and its agents, notably in France. Using access to new material, this series can tell these stories in great detail.
